The European textile industry is facing a profound transformation. Starting on January 1, 2025, all EU member states will be required to collect used textiles separately from general waste. This will create the foundation for reusing clothing, shoes, and home textiles in a more sustainable way instead of incinerating them or sending them to landfills. <\/p>\n
A central element is the so-called Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Manufacturers and retailers will be increasingly obliged to take the entire life cycle of their products into account. They will have to cover the costs of collecting, sorting, and recycling used textiles. In addition, an ecological fee model (\u201ceco-modulation\u201d) will be introduced to favor sustainable and circular products. <\/p>\n
Since July 2024, large companies have already been prohibited from destroying unsold textiles. Medium-sized enterprises will be subject to this rule from 2030, while small and micro businesses will continue to be exempt. The regulation aims to reduce waste of resources and promote reuse. <\/p>\n
The export of used textiles will also be subject to stricter regulation. The goal is to prevent non-recyclable textile waste from being labeled as \u201csecond-hand goods\u201d and exported to countries outside the EU. This is intended to ensure that the responsibility for textile waste is not shifted abroad. <\/p>\n
With new requirements for product labeling and green claims, stricter standards will be applied to sustainability claims in the future. Companies that market their products as \u201cgreen\u201d or \u201csustainable\u201d will have to provide verifiable evidence. Digital product passports and extended labeling information are also being planned. <\/p>\n
These measures mark the beginning of a new era for the European textile industry. Recycling, reuse, and circularity will become decisive factors \u2013 not only because of regulatory requirements, but also as part of a responsible approach to resources. <\/p>\n
